I can't believe it has been half a year already. I'm so sorry the blog hasn't been updated that long! I feel terrible. I hope that you're all doing great, and that all this talk about the H1N1 pandemic** hasn't sent you in a panic. The best way to deal with this right now, in my opinion, is to know more about the situation, keep a level head about it, and be extra careful.

Moving on.

I have some updates for you:

1. The Easter Show
Theater Down South once again braved the North to put up three shows, one each in The Podium, SM Megamall, and SM City Annex. They were all simultaneously held on, well, Easter Sunday, and from what I read on Joey's blog, everyone had a crazy time rehearsing. Pictures here and here!

2. Summer Workshops
April and May saw a lot more kids being introduced to musical theater, and I daresay they all had a great time. Classes were held in De La Salle Zobel in the Ayala Alabang Village and the Insular Life building at the Filinvest Corporate City. I personally witnessed the last couple sessions in Insular Life, and the kids were amazing. Also, I had the chance to help light the kids' showcase and stay in the Insular Life Theater's sound booth during the show, and it was a pretty fresh (and scary) experience. Micko, who took care of music apart from acting in Rapunzel, stayed there in the booth with me and provided some much needed entertainment. Workshop photos here, here, and here!

3. The TDS Website
Micko, who handles TheaterDownSouth.com, has given it an updated look. Apart from that, it now features banners for our next show, Treasure Island, which will open very, very soon! Also, there's a new profile entry there, so I suggest you go over there now to see these changes for yourself. :-)

And last but not least:

4. Treasure Island Open Auditions
We're gonna be holding open auditions at Academy One in BF Parañaque on Monday, June 15th, from 1:00 through 5:00pm. You must prepare 32 bars of any song, or a Musical Theater-type song. Bring your own score (a pianist will be available) or minus one, and please do not forget to bring your CVs or Bio-data and your picture. For more information, download this audition companion, or visit our website. Break a leg!

Okay, that's it for me. Good night all, and have a great weekend!

Hey!

December's proving to be quite a busy month for us. We've been rehearsing for a couple of weeks now for a Christmas show we're doing at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium on Sunday, December 7th. It's called Notes from the North Pole. If you're gonna be in the area then, be sure to see us!

We have a couple more shows lined up: On Saturday, December 13th, we'll be doing a different show in the Ayala Alabang Village, and it's called There's Nothing Like Christmas. We'll be running it again at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium on Tuesday, December 23rd. I haven't gotten wind of the specific performance schedules yet, so keep checking back here. I'll edit this post once I find out. :)

Cheers and good night!

EDIT: December 13 and 23 shows - 6pm

We are also set to perform on the 25th at The Block!  We'll be doing Notes from the North Pole. Be sure to see us there, too!

Hey, how's everybody doing?

We ended our run of 'Rapunzel' in September (let me take this chance to thank everyone who came to see the show!! You guys rock!), but that doesn't mean we haven't been working. Some of us have been going quite often to De La Salle Zobel to help out with Act 25's production of Grease, some have been going to ballet classes every week, and some have been preparing for the Christmas shows. In fact, 10 of us, including three new members Michelle, Jen, and Erric, did a show on the 15th for Lifestyle Network's Holiday Treasures Bazaar, which was held in A. Venue in Makati.

So there. We have been keeping ourselves busy [pretty much].

By the way, I just posted some photos we took during Rapunzel's technical dress rehearsal at the Insular Life Theatre (if you look closely, you'll see the tower in its early stages). Also, Sid Catindig, Ben's brother, posted a link to his Multiply site, which has photos taken during the closing performance. Finally, I decided to dress the site up a little bit, just to keep in step with the season. It'll be December soon, guys, and we can never prepare for Christmas too soon!

Before I log off and turn in, I'd just like to welcome the new people who auditioned a couple weeks ago! You guys had better get used to us pretty soon, things can get pretty crazy when we're together, haha.

Alright. 1.16am. Good night guys. The bedroom beckons.

Daryl

P.S. If any of you have photos taken during Rapunzel's run and you want them seen here, let us know!

I've been dealt a bad hand.  I've lived all alone for so long and the only thing that made me happy was my beautiful, bountiful garden!  I know I have a gift for growing plants, but this is ridiculous!  A green thumb would have sufficed!  Must I really be ALL green?!

I have better luck zapping a quick-footed rabbit than to snag a decent guy!  Can you blame me for coercing an insolent cobbler into bartering his first-born child for my precious vegetables? Is it so terrible that my strong maternal instincts have compelled me to keep this child locked in a tower so I can have some company?  So she talks to her hair...every kid has had an imaginary friend at one point.

Now that my baby girl is sixteen, she wants to see the outside world.  What the heck am I going to do now?  Ah...maybe a cake will distract her!  I've never really tried baking before, but I have some experience with a cauldron.  How different could that be?

If that doesn't work, I'll be neck-deep in muck.  I'll have to wait for another stupid cobbler to sneak into my garden!  Then I'll have to start all over.  I only want someone to come home to for crying out loud!  What does a witch have to do?!?!

Ah well, time to get started on that cake.  If I can only remember where I put my jar of eye of newt...

I tripped over a gnarled root in our garden today.

It was a nice morning, and I thought it would be good for me to get some fresh air by the pond. A new manuscript had come in the mail the other day and I brought it with me to read. Around noon, Simon came out on to the grounds to call me in for lunch, so I started making my way back to the castle and the stupid tree I was leaning against just chose to stick one of its roots out of the ground. Simon saw the whole thing and couldn't stop laughing.

Sometimes I get the urge to send him back to the valet's quarters and put him back in his place. But Father wouldn't approve; he seems to think I can't take care of myself and has instructed the castle architects to build Simon a big room adjacent to mine. I'm 16! I can look after myself, thank you. I don't need a man dogging me everywhere I go or to shave my face for me (though I must admit it has come in handy quite a few times). I can fetch myself a glass of water or fix myself a small snack. But at the end of the day, annoying and bossy as Simon may get sometimes, he still is my only friend. I don't meet people very often, except for the occasional princes that my Father's friends bring with them with their egos bigger than their brains. I guess I can hardly blame them... maybe it naturally happens when you save townsfolk or maidens (!!!) every other week or so.

And Simon does help me whenever I get bouts of depression. Who wouldn't get depressed when your Father keeps ignoring you at the dinner table? Or when your Mother keeps leaving the house to spend time with her cousins at the vineyard? Apart from guards who perfunctorily bow to me when I walk past them in the hallways, Simon's the only person I get to decently talk to, so I guess I can forgive him for laughing.

I had better learn to "master myself," as my Father would call it. Maybe then I'll be allowed out on my own (okay, maybe I'll take Simon with me... I don't think I have a choice) and I'll get to save my own maiden or bring home a dragon egg.

Dear Diary,

Life was rough on me today.

One of our breakfast table's legs is beginning to loosen, the lobby toilet keeps getting clogged, and that gosh-darned door of Room 7 keeps CREAKING. In the middle of the gosh-darned night!

It's hard being an innkeeper, really. It's such a responsibility! It's a whole day of checking: checking to see if there's still enough water, checking to see if
there's still enough food, checking on the guests... Those annoying guests! Sure, I appreciate the fact that they want to stay in my inn... but they don't seem to appreciate the effort that I put into this place, to make sure they have a nice and comfortable stay. I'm getting sick of it! But of course, I don't have a choice but to be kind and respectful towards those ingrates -- I can't exactly reveal my naturally grumpy personality to them.

I guess that's why you're here, Ms. Diary... all this hiding and pretending to not be grumpy drives me insane. I'm really grateful for you... and even for those peasants! Those beggars.. argh. I hate having beggars in front of my inn. But I am grateful for them too... they give me a nice breather from being all nice and polite, and let me be my angry, grumpy, butch self!

Sigh. Maybe tomorrow, some peasants will come along and knock on my door. Maybe they'll ask for breakfast, and maybe they won't have the money to pay for it. And maybe I can kick them out and send them on their way! Yeah... that'd be fun. I get to be myself again.

Good night, Diary. See you tomorrow.

Love,

The Innkeeper

Theater Down South turns one today.

It was exactly a year ago that I sat in the middle of a flat in Makati, surrounded by people I didn't know, looking at their faces, listening to their stories, all the while practically shaking in my seat, awaiting my audition to begin. I don't remember being so anxious in my life. I remember meeting Niki, who let me into Joonee's condo, whom I met while she was going down the stairs. I remember turning around to meet everyone else who was there: Ria, Gary, Roan, Ben, and Lesley. I then sat down next to Gary, the first person in the company I talked to. They were apparently waiting for everyone else to come... Michael was still somewhere, getting food.

I remember Michael walking in not long after, carrying pizza, then Mika being introduced to me. We all hung around in the living room for a bit, then we all made our way to Joonee's roof deck, where we were supposed to have the company's first general assembly. I remember recognizing John when he got there... I realized I saw him in school all the time. I remember meeting Joms, Micko, and Pammu. I was also introduced to Jaime del Mundo, Susan Arcega, and Marlo Veloso. I remember Niki setting down the Midsummer maquette on the table, explaining how everything should go onstage. I remember Pammu approaching me during dinner, saying something, then adding, "Hi, I'm Pam" to the end of the statement. I remember trying Ria's brownies for the very first time. Then I also remember walking away when Lesley and Pammu started talking about the last Harry Potter book because I didn't want to hear any spoilers. I remember hanging around in the mini-library there, my Coke in my hand, mainly because I didn't know what to do or who to talk to. Then I remember Michael calling me so I could read for him. Joey read after me.

I remember thinking to myself all that evening, I hope I get in. Please, God, let me get in.

***

Theater Down South has come a long way in such a short span of time. In only a year, we opened a 2-hour Shakespearean play, performed in SM Mall of Asia and the Enchanted Kingdom, appeared on TV, made our mark on the papers and the web, conducted Musical Theatre workshops in De La Salle Zobel and Academy One, and prepared for our first Music Theater International musical. I am truly looking forward to seeing the company's future unfold.

Rapunzel opens in two weeks. We saw and worked with our sets for the very first time just last Friday, and I am thrilled. It truly has been quite an experience working on this show with such a great and warm company. I can't wait for it to begin and to start playing for all you guys out there. See you all in a couple weeks!

Cheers!

Two back-to-back monologues by Mailes Kanapi

The Return of Flor
Written and directed by Rodolfo Vera, Jr.

Flor (Contemplacion) is finally in heaven. God suddenly asks "What would you like to do now?" As Flor's simple eternal wish is granted, God briefly sends her back to earth to fulfill a mission. As Flor traipses from heaven to earth and back, we also get to uncover some unknown and various "truths" about her story. Funny yet very compelling, Flor will make you laugh and hopefully go home a little bit different in a beautiful way.

Did she do it? Does it matter?

Welcome to Intelstar
Written and Directed by Chris Martinez

It is 11pm on a weeknight. Ma'am Chelsea, a trainor, enthusiastically welcomes a batch of newbies to one of the top call centers in the country. As she leads them through orientation night, we are introduced to the new definition of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) - workers who "live and breathe" overseas without having to set foot out of Philippine soil.

Flor is dead. Chelsea is alive - or really, is she?

Two shows only: October 5 and October 12, 2009
